[RFI] What Does Variable Speed Mean?

I was referring to the "Furnace" fan blower that moves air through the house.


There are a couple different configurations for variable speed blower (fan) motors. Some are quieter than others. I have a friend who had to have his furnace manufacturer's factory tech come out and install toroids in his furnace to quiet it down so that he could DX. He does not have a Carrier Infinity as I have.... and I have not found any RFI from my furnace (I am a 160, 80, 40, 20, 15, & 10 meter DXer).

I am wondering if there is confusion maybe.  I believe my furnace has two fan/blowers .  One is forcing air though the ducts to heat the house and it has more than one speed.  The other is for the combustion chamber, that one I don’t know if it has more than one speed, maybe it does as Gary mentioned, I think what he was referring too.

What Jim is describing as a “variable speed fan,” in the context of RFI production, is one that is continuously variable, not one that has speeds  controlled in discrete steps. See below what I excerpted from his explanation.

variable speed motor as being more like a volume control, so its speed
can be varied over any value from zero to high.
