I once about 8 years back DF'd a strong DSL signal on 80 meters to a residence
(a single house) about 1/4 of a mile away, and confirmed it using a couple
different receivers including an HF mobile. The alley was driveable right past the
house and I used that route on several passes with car and bicycle.
A mile and a half sounds QUITE unusual for DSL. I *have* had line noise sources
out to four miles and more, and several at 1 1/2 miles as well.
What are the chances your guy is wrong? I use receivers with rotatable loopsticks
and sense antennas to eliminate the 180 degree ambiguity when doing DFing,
and am respective of being within 1/4 wavelength (120 ft on 160, 65 ft on 80m)
of any possible 'source' because the direction finding is now in the near field
and no longer are you working with a "plane wave" coming straight at you
and the DF receiver indications change.
It is possible though, to come close to sources and note the strength of the
local fields coming off the vertical ground wire on power poles when within
a foot or so, and I do that with the RF gain cut way back.

I spent an over 2 hours today trying to find a way to contact AT & T to try
and get the problem fixed but I have been unable to talk to anyone who knows
what to do. I've called an 800 number only to get overseas operators and I
asked to speak to someone in the US but no luck for various reasons (they
weren't able to get the contact for me). I am not an AT & T Uverse
subscriber but I do have 2 pot lines.
The noise is heard at my location on 80 and 160 and has traces of a
switching p/s problem.
Does anyone have any idea how to contact AT & T for rectification of this
problem?
