Hi Mike,
Necessary is such yes/no, go, no-go question... Perhaps a different
question might be, which is best...
Answering the "which is best" question-- in my opinion, a sine-wave type
of generator is best. Less issues with RF spray, among other issues...
I use a Honda EU2000, and have had zero issues with it. I keep it at
lease 50 feet from any antenna. Our club has a non sine-wave generator,
and the noise floor increases when it is running at the same distance.
I am sure if you moved the non sine-wave generator a few hundred feet
away, things would quiet down. That brings up other issues, like
voltage drop in the extension cord to the shack... That and the non
Honda generator is loud, while the Honda is not... It is a blended
decision as to which is best...
You be the judge...
