[RSM] RSM Digest, Vol 1, Issue 12

There is a number of RTTY contest included. ARRL RTTY Roundup, and NAQP
RTTY come to mind. This is why I took up RTTY contesting.

The problem with JT65/PSK and "other" digital modes is that they are not
well suited to contesting, or DXing for that matter. I have not tried
them, but as I understand it, when it takes a minute plus to complete a
QSO, and they don't handle QRM/pileups well, that limits the number of
folks who will use it. RTTY has its shortcomings, but seems well suited to
contesting/DXing.

As a general rule, it is one contest per weekend. The Sprints are
included, so there are a few weekends where there are two contests.

A frequent comment on the MWA reflector is - some folks can only get so
many "kitchen passes" per year, and they have to pick and choose the
contests they participate in. At the same time, two contests per month
still adds up to 24 contests per year.

Not every contest works for everyone - and that is fine. For myself, VHF
contests are of limited interest for example, so I focus on ones that have
6 meters, and hope for propagation. At the same time, the VHF contests are
popular with folks in Southern Ontario, as there is an active VHF/UHF
group, and they can work folks in New York, and other near-by states.

I understand there are a couple of active VHF/UHF folks in Winnipeg, and
this might be a good way to get them interested in joining RSM!

I understand there was an active VHF/UHF group in Duluth/Minneapolis (not
sure - it may have fallen apart when a few of the prime movers became
SK's), but at least there is a large ham population "close enough" that
this might be what is needed to spark interest in making this happen.
