[RTTY] Important RTTY contests?

I agree with Tyler. The biggest RTTY contest of the year is CQWW.
The 2nd most popular for world wide participation is WPX. I think
JARTS is the next biggest RTTY contest of the year. Then there
is a toss up between BARTG and SARTG (I love them both). Next is
perhaps a toss up between ANARTS and WAE (love both of them too).

JARTS has not been around as long as the others but it's a very fun
contest at a great time of year (it started in 1972 - I was second only
to P40RY Eddie, G0AZT, who got stranded on the island after our
record breaking CQWW MS effort - weird how things happen).

For me, the ARRL RTTY Roundup is the 2nd most fun contest of the
year, but it's not so great outside the USA (operated from C6A in '94 and
it was like being on Mars... no one heard me!). I've operated all 13 Roundups
and wouldn't miss it for the world.

Unfortunately I did miss CQWW twice. Once for duck hunting (1987, the
first year for that contest) and in 1998 when I had to shut down 8 hours
into the contest, disassemble the entire station, load it into my truck and
evacuate for Hurricane Georges.

The others worth mentioning for world-wide participation are VOLTA,
BARTG Sprint and the SCC Championship.

The NAQP is a great contest for North America and the rest of the RTTY
contest are fine with me. The EA used to be the worst of the year, but
they changed their rules. I've enjoyed operating the XE, EA, SP and Italian contests.

Anytime I can get on and find my RTTY contesting friends is good for me.
Seeing those familiar callsigns always brings a smile. Seeing new callsigns
on RTTY brings almost a bigger smile. It's great to see the mode grow.

73, Don AA5AU
