[RTTY] Ahh, the sound!!

We had a fleet flash net at one duty location. When flash traffic ( Z )
would come in the bell would go off about 20 times alerting you to high
precedence traffic. I forget the model of the machine(s) and how it keyed
the Z to set off the bell ( figure shift J ). I did not like hearing it go
off as some of the subject matter was down right scary. Especially the TS
stuff as it was at the height of the cold war.
Russ, WA3FRP , was on 30meters yesterday with an model 28, pair of Collins
twins,R390A/URR and a STU-6. He had a clean signal but the shift was a a
constant 190hz.

Brain - you might remember the controversy when the Feds made the commercial
TTY operators cease their annual Christmas message that utilized the bell to
play Christmas Carols? From what I remember the bell had ended up being
also used as a warning system on the Red Phone of some part of it so they
would not allow the bell to be rung so much.
Faint memory of that happening
