I prefer free software as well and look for items that are released
under the GPL or other open source or free licenses.

Hard to do on the M$-Windows platform with its tradition of
pay-to-play software, but N1MM, MMTTY, and the DXLab Suite come pretty
close (though none are open source).

Trying to recall the last software I bought and I think it was ARC780
to program and control one of my scanners.  Was going to buy ARC396
when I got a newer receiver, but it didn't have enough features over
what was out there for free to justify the cash outlay.

N1MM, DXLab, et al, are not in that same category - as far as I can
tell, they *lead* their categories.  That they are free (of charge) is
just a nice bonus.
