Isn't it the other way around? :-)
Even if you select "FSK" on the front panel of the FT-1000D, it is
really doing AFSK.
The FT-990 and FT-1000/D take an FSK keying signal, uses that to key a
simple AFSK generator inside the rig and from then on behaves just
like AFSK, but with the audio processor forced off.
One of the names given to such a scheme is "Keyed AFSK," the internal
AFSK generator is keyed by an external FSK keying signal.
From the FT-1000MP on, the FSK keying signal disappears into a DDS
chip, presumably to generate direct FSK. But who knows what kind of
FSK wave shaping occurs inside the chip :-).
