If you have the opportunity to have a simple 10m antenna , dipole or a vertical  for the next 10m RTTY contest can be a good start for you
getting a Contest log like N1MM  for free,  Writelog for 30 dlls  or  DXLOG  free (in development)   or just the plain MMVARI or MMTTY 
 can give you a good chance to be active  and use the equipment, also the 10m  ARRL    contest SSB /CW   is also a good chance to use the radio
 and make some contacts with small set up  
give a try and have fun  this December and get hook in the RTTY and why not contesting , we need more people active in the contest

I want to thank all of you that replied with great suggestions and warm welcomes.  Thank you.

So over the weekend I attempted to use my rain gutters for my antenna, and did not get the success I was hoping to get.  I am now shopping for an antenna setup.  At this time, I think I have two good options.  One, I have a tri-pod where I could mount on the roof, get a mast, rotater, and a thee element beam, and maybe add a vertical on top.  Also, I have about 6 10' metal fence posts that I could use as a mast, maybe setup a G5RV.  All of this may have to wait until sigh, December.


In the meantime, I plan to look over all the good links you all sent, I am determined to get on the air.

Like yourself I've comfortable with the three main operating systems out

N1MM logger for contesting.

And antennas will grab you.  It has almost become a hobby within a hobby
for me and I live on a small lot with antenna restrictions!  To me, this
makes it even more fun (to look on the bright side) as I've developed a
fascination with trying to figure out what is really going on with these
things so I can maximize the antennas I have.....which at the moment are
three runs of speaker wire hanging from a tree (10, 15/40, and 20 meters).
  I worked Iceland in the last RTTY contest with that.  :)
