Just to add my two pennies in to this discussion.

How about making the sending of the name, TU, and greetings ( GA,
GE or whatever) a
mandatory thing? If everybody HAD to send those, RTTY would be seen
in a new light of a
Gentleman's Mode. This was how it was described in the early days
of RTTY. I mean EARLY
days too, as I was active in the early 1960s.

So many these days are hell-bent on saying as little as possible,
in order to maintain the Q-rate
and yes, I am to blame in some respects, because teaching some of
the newbies the art of good
contesting I always advocate as short a macro as possible, so I am
play devil's advocate here!

I hope I am not alone, but I always get a kick out of hearing the
other station refer to me by
name and also seeing a TU/73. Those things give me just as much
pleasure as a higher place
in the results. Somebody once told me that it was taking part that
counts, not winning. Well,
obviously it is nice to win, but if it becomes a chore when somebody
sends an extra period in
the macro, perhaps it's time to go smell the roses.

Well, that happens to be the F1 default in MMTTY and commonly used by DXers in pileups. Maybe this ham wasn't in the contest. Believe it or not, we do have to share these bands with non-contesters.
