You've had the best advice going from Bill and Jeff. One thing to add; don't
waste a minute trying to use a simple external amplifier and tone control.
You are only hearing a very narrow portion of the audio spectrum. Any 'tone'
adjustment would be EXACTLY the same as turning the volume down on the rig.
