When contesting I use foam ear plugs then headphones. This means I can have
a much lower audio level in the ears. It also reduces the external noise
from the cooling fans on the amplifiers relative to the signal being heard.
I find this method means I can operate for longer as fatigue is lower.

My primary reason for using low tones is that they are less stressful to
listen to and much less fatiguing over a long contest period.
For the same reason (less fatigue), I reduce the headphone level because all
my ears need to know is the presence or absence of a signal. This also
makes it more practical to disable AGC in RTTY mode because there is less
danger in loud signals hurting one's ears.
