Here's what you need for Field Day or the June VHF
contest, or perhaps for emergency communications
after the next natural disaster.
I'm giving away (yes, GIVING AWAY) two high quality
gasoline generators that I no longer need (and can
no longer LIFT). Both include the original factory
manuals and have been serviced regularly.
This is a first-come, first-served freebie for licensed
radio amateurs who could make use of a good generator.
The generators are as follows:
1) Makita G3501R: an electric-start, 3000-watt contrac-
tor grade generator in excellent condition... The starter
requires a 12-volt battery (or you can pull the rope if
there's no battery handy). Jumper cables and a car
battery work fine. This unit originally sold for $1300.
It has about 500 hours on it. It should be good for
another 500 before it needs major maintenance, but there
is no guarantee at this price! It weighs 135 pounds.
This unit was used at my Tehachapi mountain radio site
for several years. A photo is online at:
http://commfaculty.fullerton.edu/woverbeck/genset.htm
2) Onan 4.0 BF: truly a Motor Home Generator Emeritus...
It's rated for 4,000 watts continuous duty with an engine
displacement rivaling that of some small cars! It delivers
full power at only 1800 rpm, half the speed of most other
generators (which makes it quiet). This unit provided
power for mountaintopping from 1977 until 1996; it
has at least 2,500 hours on it. When it was removed from
a van that was being sold in 1996, it was still running
well. It's probably good for several more contests before
it has to have an overhaul. Like other Onan generators,
it requires a motor home-type installation in an enclosure.
It needs a fuel source, a heavy starter cable to a 12-volt
battery and 110 or 220 volt AC cabling from its outlet box.
It weighs 217 pounds, not counting the under-vehicle
exhaust system (included, with a near-new muffler). It
resembles Onan's recent BGE Emerald generators, which sold
for more than $2,000 and were installed in thousands of motor
homes.

Both generators should be picked up in Tustin (in Orange
County) promptly after someone claims each one by e-mailing
me.
Yes, this give-away is for real.
