The HFTA Program is useful in this analysis.
Assume that the Steppir equals a 4 el yagi
Assume that the KT-34 equals a 3 el yagi
HFTA statistics show that the wave angle to Europe from SOCAL on 14MHz
is around 8 degrees.
HFTA shows that, with equal power, 4 el at 80' is 9dB louder than 3 el
at 30' at 8 degrees.
HFTA shows the same 9dB difference on the 15 meter path to Europe (3
degrees at this part of the solar cycle).
The difference between 100 and 1500 watts is 12 dB, so the KT at 30'
would be 3 dB louder on transmit into europe.
On receive, the Steppir s/n ratio would be 9dB higher, assuming
identical noise levels.
Since you can't work 'em if you can't hear 'em, I think you would be
much better off with the Steppir at 80'.
