Rick,
Its been about 10 years since I made my first 160 QSO from the West Coast.
It's taken that long to work 100 countries and that includes 1 trip with a
portable KW setup to the Salton Sea for the CQ 160 CW, 1 trip to Koehn dry
lake for the CQ 160 CW, and two trips to the El Mirage Dry Lake Bed (Stew
Perry TBDC and CQ WW CW).
It can be done. I know two guys on city lots as small as mine in Los Angeles
that are each pushing 140 countries.
Mental instability is a good prerequisite, but if you don't start out that
way you will pick it up along the way :-)
Good luck!!
Mike, W4EF
P.S. I think I am going to build a ten-meter antenna now
