Well, there wasn't much response but, the general consensus appears to be the ICOM 7800 from two owners and two others that suggested it might be better but didn't own one.

The FT-1000 in various forms got four votes, most likely the best bang for the buck.

Orion II and ICOM Pro II tied with one each.

Thanks for all the comments.... I think I'll look on eBay for an HW-8 or 9 hi hi.
