That is very sad news.
I met Earl back in the mid 1980's.  At the time, I lived about five or ten 
miles from him.  He had much larger antennas than I, and he graciously 
allowed me to operate two California QSO Parties from his QTH.  As I recall, 
I also operated one WPX contest from there. He was a great host and cheered 
me on from the sidelines.
I hadn't been in touch with him much in recent years but did exchange a 
couple of emails with him this past winter. Despite the fact that he had 
quite a few years on me, he remembered facts from my operations at his place 
much more clearly (and accurately) than I did!
I also know that he was an avid 160 meter enthusiast and did quite well on 
that band (among others).
