Oh my, this is definitely sad and surprising news! I knew him for many years both as a student of his at PCC and as a friend. He, and Ken Johnson (W6FU), and Stan Coutant (AA6SC) administered my Novice/Tech exam in 1992. My first Field Day events were with the PCC QSO Club. We spent several weekends re-guying the three antenna towers at PCC a few years ago. His CW operating skill was one of the reasons I kept working on the Extra class ticket - I passed the 20wpm test 2 days before the requirement was dropped. He was also the one who started me on attending the TRW and Rio Hondo swap meets. He was a stickler for the rules and *always* made sure we operated within our limits and wouldn't allow us to have on-campus meetings without the proper permits/approvals. I admired this unwavering integrity, esp in today's world where everyone bends the rules.
We exchanged quite a bit of gray-matter over the years...his electronics knowledge with my computer hardware skills. I last spoke with him in late 2006 during one of our PCC QSO Club Alumni get-togethers. IIRC, he just retired from teaching and was enjoying riding with a new lady companion he met during one of his "centuries". Ironically, I was just about to e-mail the alumni to see if anyone wanted together and catch-up. I guess we will, but it won't be for same reasons.
RIP Mr. Hetland. You won't be forgotten.

It is with sadness that I report that Harvey Hetland, N6MM, of
Altadena, CA, passed away today after being hit on his bicycle this
morning by a hit-and-run driver. The accident took place on La Tuna
Canyon Road in the San Fernando Valley.
Harvey had become a serious cyclist in recent years, regularly
traveling hundreds of miles.
Over the years Harvey contributed significantly to the Los Angeles
area Amateur Radio community. He served as ARRL Los Angeles Section
Communications Manager when he was WA6KZI. He played a role in the
Pasadena Radio Club, including a stint as bulletin editor. He was also
editor of the Southern California DX Club Bulletin.
Although I did not see much of Harvey in recent years, I have fond
memories of working with him and the late Phil Goetz, N6ZZ, on
projects such as his Los Angeles Section Newsletter.
RIP OM.
73,
Dick Norton, N6AA
