Here's a good table for comparing receivers:

The most important column is the second column from the 
right, Dynamic Range Narrow Spaced (2 KHz).
For serious contesting, without very loud locals on 
groundwave or line-of sight, about 77 dB is adequate, 
especially if you ride the RF gain control. The FT-950 is 
not yet in this comparison table, but ARRL testing reports 
71 dB.
