Re 501 c 3:
I serve as president of a 501 c 3 corporation called "Friends of the Taylor
Observatory-Norton Plantetarium". www.friendsoftaylor.org
There was a "automatic revocation" of our 501 c 3 status this year, along
with about 100,000 other organizations so we've had to apply for
re-instatement. Briefly, here is the process for a first time
application:
1) For an overview look at:
http://www.afj.org/assets/resources/nap/501cs-benefits.pdf
- There are other sites listing the benefits of 501 c 3. Study them
carefully to see if the benefits are worth the trouble.
-
2) Study the information at http://www.irs.gov/charities/
If you decided to proceed:
1) Incorporate your group with the Secretary of State of CA as a
non-profit. That requires by-laws that are consistent with 501 c 3
guidelines. scientific, educational , religious and disaster assistance
are the common categories
- Helpful to have legal assistance. . . we are under the
auspices of Lake County Office of Education; their attorney drew up the
articles of incorporation several years ago.
2) Obtain an EIN with federal gov. (easy); with incorporation you will be
assigned a CA Corporate Organization number. (easy)
3) File the dreaded 1023 with IRS. see www.irs.gov/eo [challenging]
Helpful, but not essential, to have a CPA
4) Concurrently with 1023, file form CT-1 with the State of CA,attorney
general, Office of Charitable Trusts.
4) wait seemingly forever. -- currently about 9 months.
5) When the authorization letter arrives from IRS . .complete the filing
with the CA Dept of Justice (they are the watchdog agency for all
charitable organizations in CA.)
The total cost, assuming you have volunteer attorney and CPA assistance may
be around $600. There are organizations that will assist you: for example

I guess you could declare yourself a church in the religion of radio
contesting. Then no yearly tax filings are required.
