Comments:
Goals were to hit the top ten for my first time and to reset the SBER county
record set in 2010 of 232,899 points. I think the top ten was reached, the
county record should be reset again, and I missed a sweep as I missed NT.
I started off the contest with no preparation. A broken second computer,
antennas not checked out, no primary keyer (I neglected to build another
Winkeyer kit), and a sick body. My personal lack of preparation and a lack
of
rest from my work week honestly had me considering not participating much.
In
fact, in the face of some decent rates I figured I'd pull the plug during
the
first couple of hours. An old hand me down laptop, a borrowed Winkeyer, and
a
quick adjustment of the 80m inverted-v put me into the races. I am so glad
that
I remembered how much I look forward to this contest all year long and to
call
BS on all those excuses.
It was obvious early on that Danny (N6MJ) piloting W6YI was obviously on
some
nitrous. It appears that he as reset his own personal all time in-state
record.
It was also cool to see (from my vantage point) Ken - K6LA and K6NA (Craig
- N6ED
at the helm) putting on the heat. I couldn't catch those guys
with raw QSOs but they set the bar for me each time we'd find each other
on the
second radio. Kurt - W6PH and Dick - W6TK kept close pace on the other side
of
the QSO count and kept me honest on that second radio when I just wanted to
let
the running radio be all that I had to think about. John - K6AM
on CW had me wanting to not ask for repeats so that I could show some
improvement in skill (though I have a ways to go and needed some fills).
W1UE, K5TR, K4BAI, and N4PN were LOUD. I surely thought my K3's front end
wouldn't survive me working them too often. KH6LC was also loud considering
that my antennas were at an oblique angle to him.
It was good working so many other SCCC members.
73,
Tim / N6WIN.
