[SCCC] Remote Contesting

First, it really does not matter to me what others do in a contest. I
compete against myself. The rewards I reap are having fun working lots of DX
and trying to beat my own score. Competing against others is not in my
crosshairs.
Second, personally it is interesting to operate these remote stations but
for me it is counter to the amateur nature of our hobby. Are we not supposed
to put stations together and operate them? Grant it that some can not do
this however to sit back and let someone else do the work and then hand you
the mike (or key) is like having someone hook a fish for you, real up to the
boat and hand you the rod so you can land it. Again there is a place for
that too but it should not be the first thing we run to. How about joining a
local group whose mission is to build a remote in your locale or even a club
station?
Third, isn't this a commercial venture? Sure it is necessary to sell
hardware or rent DX locations but to subscribe to a remote location radio
network, and pay money for a portion of "on the air" time sounds like it
violates the not for profit legal requirement of our hobby.
Again, these are my opinions.

One of the goals of the W7RN station is to pioneer remote contesting. It is
currently sanctioned for CQ WW contests and we expect it to be adopted by
other contest sponsors.
Specifically, you would have a K3 or a K3/0 and an interface box and you
would log into W7RN remotely (from anywhere that has a high speed internet
connection) for a specific operating slot, like 40 long path or 15 JA run.
Each operator would incur the cost of the K3/0 and interface from Remote Ham
Radio (or just the interface box if you have a K3) and a setup fee. The host
station would pay the cost of connectivity for the time you are on the air.
(see http://remotehamradio.com for their other membership pricing and
details).
Once we have tested the ?hired gun? category, the RHR boys would figure out
cost effective options for enhanced options like using a remote station for
a dedicated contest period single op.
Question #1 ? Does remote contest operating appeal to you and your
lifestyle? (as opposed to finding a house in a unrestricted area and
building a station)
Question # 2 - Are you interested in becoming a remote operator using this
scheme?
Question # 3 - Are you interested in becoming a remote operator of W7RN
using this scheme before CQ WW DX next month?
PLEASE ANSWER OFF LINE and I will post the collated results.

Comments:Spent a little time working the contest from home on Friday night.
?Saturday and Sunday I spent at K6CBS in Hollywood at Television City. ?10M
was definitely the band with the best signals and action. Later switched to
15M and lastly 20M into the evening. ?It was nice to have 10M back in
action. ?I hope it continues for CW WW CW.
Equipment: ?ICOM 756 PRO III, ?Ameritron AL-811H and M2 log at 75 feet at
CBS.
? ? ? ? ? ? Yaesu FTDX5000, ACOM 1000, Stepp-IR small vertical and S9
vertical for 40M/80M at home.
