14,000 foot mountains five miles west of me (Mt Whitney)resulting in one
VK, one ZL,

You didn't miss much. . 3 VK's and 3 ZL's worked here (VK2IA, VK7CW and
VK4CW) plus a 3D2. But maybe 5 KH6's on cw.

Looks as if your azimuth is about 6 degrees; similar here at Kelseyville,
Lake County, with Mt. Konocti rising about 4-7 degrees between Rio de
Janiero to Santiago Chile. So had a awful problem with South America.
Normally not an issue except it was problematic with this contest.

Thanks for the CW QSO: you had a huge S-9+ signal here when we worked.

Saturday morning until 8 am
At 7:15 local time here about the only signal I could hear was NN7ZZ in
Utah. By 7:30 band began to open. But sunrise here is 30 mins later.

Comments:
Unusual conditions on Fri evening with SA signals bending around to arrive
as if they were ZL's; worked just one, a PY2.

Closest QSO to Eu was EA8CN on Sunday. Great difficulty
working SA with my 4-7 deg horizon PY to CE; apparently low angle was
required.

Coverage of Canadian provinces very good. . NL NB, NS, PEI and NT all
worked easily. Garth, VE8NSD very kindly switched to CW after our 10m SSB
QSO, providing a mult which few, if any, others obtained; our cw effort
revealed a problem with his keyer. Missed VE4 and VE6.

No WAS this year . missed NM, SD, RI, WY and NE. Took 1100 Q's to work
DE, first on SSB then on CW.

Slightly less than half the points compared to last year - not an
unexpected result with reduced sunspots. You think this year was bad. .
stay tuned. Pretty soon it will be the 10m die-hards like KA6BIM and
probably N6ZFO. Even the Geminid meteors will be of no help, as their date
is mid-week for a few years (the peak this year was probably Sunday night)
