[SCCC] January VHF Roving Sites

Very ambitious route you have there. Having roved several times myself I
found 12 grids will pretty much eat up all the time available.

That said. For DM03 Signal Hill is the go to place as there is a park at the
top, you can also find and empty lot on the south east side of the hill.
Plenty of interference from all the commercial stuff up there but it is by
far the best DM03 spot.
DM04 has better options. My current favorite spot is the former Nike missile
site off Mulholland drive west of the 405 freeway, Takes about 20 min to
get there once you exit the 405 at Mulholland.

Unless you have a great stop in Temecula you may want consider starting at
Signal Peak in Irvine. There is a nice park at the top of the hill with nice
shot most all directions. This is DM13 and it makes for a much shorter drive
to DM03 for your next Stop.

One suggestion is to head for where the 4 grids meet so you only have to
drive a short distance between stops. On the map Bissel is where
DM04,14,05,15 meet, East of Mojave. This is high desert and works over the
hill back to LA pretty well.
Then there is the CM96.97,06,07 around Madera, Farmland but all 4 grids can
be made from the streets. Elevation not good but you can work much of the
SJV area.

Also, I highly recommend you travel with another rover. This will allow you
to log a contact in each of the grids you activate. Otherwise you will end
up getting somewhere and have may not make any contacts so you lose
activating the grid and making one contact per band in it.

Last bit of advice is to set yourself a timeline. Hardest decision is
should you stay or should you go. Stay and you will miss activating grids,
go and you may be leaving a good spot.

Good luck, hope to work you during the contest.

Subject: [SCCC] January VHF Roving Sites

Hello Group,

This last year I've been entering the VHF contests as a hilltop-portable
entry, but this coming January I'm thinking about entering as a rover for
the first time. (In January its difficult to find a high spot that isn't
showed in where I can camp overnight.) I was wondering if anyone can
recommend good operating sites around LA? I need two sites for operating
from DM03 and DM04. Any suggestions?

For the route overall, I have in mind a route starting from Temecula,
stopping in LA, and then continuing up the 5 to Avenal, and then Concord at
the farthest north. After that I would return down the 99 to Madera, over
the mountains along the 58 to Boron, and then south along the 395 back to
the inland empire. The sequence of grid squares activated would
be: DM13, DM03, DM04, DM05, CM95, CM96, CM97, CM87, CM88, CM98, DM07, DM06,
DM15, and then DM14.

73,

Brandon Clark, N6BSC
