Hah, very valid analogies Jim!
It's been interesting to see a number of 3830's and posts on this reflector where some of the guy's have started doing Unlimited or Assisted after years of not assisted. I myself enjoy a mix of either, I'm not really staunch one way or another... whatever is fun at the moment.
I got pretty big into firearms training and instruction. Another great rabbit hole to go down. Similar analogies are shared in that circle about this pistol, that caliber, this rifle, that scope, irons versus red dots, compensators or not... etc etc etc. Different groups of men and women arguing their opinions versus someone else's. Great times over a beverage and food no doubt!
At the end of the day I've found that I'm very interested in all of the opinions. I find that I agree with about all of them... who can be right or wrong? When it's all stated, hopefully the end goal of being together in the shared overall interest is found as that's what its really all about... sharing an experience with others. It'd be pretty boring to only talk to those who could care less about ham radio and to not have your CQ answered.
Hope to work you soon in an upcoming contest or meet you when we have another get together.
Great to have the reflector booming!
Tim / N6WIN.

Hi Tim... Yep, all the opinions about spotting and skimmers are purely a
point of view. It's different will all of us.
Having operated with and without spotting networks, and many years
before they existed, it's easy for me to say I can dream that they would
go away. I don't like crutches to find DX in contests, pure and
simple. I like to do my own hunting for DX in contests. Using those
crutches is like the guy who goes to Africa to hunt that hires locals to
track and find the game, tell him when to fire, so all the hunter has to
do is raise is Weatherby Magnum and pull the trigger at the right time.
It's like the fisherman who stops at roadside place with the big fishing
sign. He goes into the office, rents pole and bait, someone baits his
hook, he drops it into a pond that's overstocked, and takes a fish home
as a hero.
I see those as analogies to spotting and skimmers, not to mention the
on-the-air disasters that they cause in hectic pileups. Talk to the
contest DXpeditioners about their frustration with pileups these days,
all due to spotting.
I like to do my own hunting without someone or someTHING else doing it
for me. Just one opinion..... Jim W6YA
