SOAPBOX: This was my chance to try out the CrankIR vertical I picked up last
year. Once I got the band settings on the radial located and marked,
changing bands was a fairly easy process. Under a lightweight canopy with
the K3 on a card table and a big Bioenno battery, I was set to go. The
afternoon went rather slowly; my 95 Watts and vertical were up against a lot
of home stations this year, many running with amps and big antennas. After
a dinner break, I had four very productive hours before being sidelined with
a migraine for the rest of the night. I did manage about an hour of sleep
before getting back in the chair Sunday morning. Overall I was satisfied
with the performance of the CrankIR; it will definitely get me on the air in
a pinch or in a spot where masts and towers are not available. After 14
hours of use, the Bioenno still measured nearly 13.2 Volts; I had barely put
a dent in its capacity. Those LiFePO4 batteries are wonderful performers.
