Steve, I took my tests at the Long Beach office (on LB Blvd just north of 405) in 1979 and 1980 (3 trips - Gen, Adv, Extra).  So, they came back to LB.  Do not remember there being an LA office at that time so suspect they moved to there after you.  I see you got the reason for the message...  Dan KI6X

Yup; I bought from Fair even before I visited JJ Glass in downtown LA when I went to take my General test in 1967 (I think I ordered one of those "Beam Filters" for CW use). My mom would drop me off by the FCC's office at the Federal Building in central downtown LA, I'd go in to take my test, then walk al-l-l-l-l-l-l the way over to JJ Glass afterward. 
(The Long Beach office had been closed shortly before then, IIRC, so I never got to that one.)  'Twas a lonnnnggg walk in downtown LA for a 13 yr old kid. I don't rember encountering more than a couple or three winos, even when I passed the LA shelter. At least Fair is still in bizness; JJ Glass probly died sometime in the '80s, I dunno. I've been to Fair's place a couple times way back in the day when I was in Ohio on bizness. I bet today the entire way would be nothing but homeless tents and "establishments" on the sidewalk...
