I would have loved to have started out with a Johnson Ranger, like one of my buddies had, but spent the first 11 months of my non-renewable Novice license trying to get a surplus ARC-5 transmitter working. Finally, gave up and my mother agreed to pay for a Heathkit DX-60. Later added the companion Heathkit VFO when I upgraded to General.

The poll had Gonset(!!!), Hallicrafters, Hammarlund, and Heathkit... but
left out JOHNSON???!!! I bet far more of us started out with Johnsons,
than all of those first three combined! It was years before I could even
find one of those others that I could afford! I still rember going to
Henry Radio on Olympic Blvd. and slobbering over the very few that were
on the used-equipment shelf. OHHH, the shame of it all, to be so
forgotten; RIP, E. F. Johnson... =8-/
