For me, the rigs being mentioned also before my time. In '78 (Novice) I had
saved money in high school working at the library and when I got my license
bought a Henry Tempo-One transceiver (crystals were no longer needed) from
Ham Radio Outlet (old location) in Anaheim. The meter said Yaesu FT-200 I
seem to remember. A partially solid state radio with a couple circuit
boards plugged into tube sockets.

Subject: [SCCC] First HF Rig
A lot of these stories are from those who were hamming long before me.
My first rig was purchased off eBay. An MFJ 9420. I don't remember where I
got the power supply. I tried a reclaimed computer supply, but it was too
noisy. Then there was 2009 Field Day where I ran it off of 10 D cells for
121 Qs.
Eventually I moved up to a used TS-520. Great receiver.
