I've got two stories for you, Dino:

1) A friend of mine operated a 160 contest in the late 80's at a station
in Ohio. They used an SB-200 as the driver amp (I think the final was a
3CX3000). This OM had 1 mile of hardline run from his shack to a field
of beverage antennas that he could select with DTMF tones on 70CM. The
idea was to be able to search for mults while transmitting with the big
amplifier. Apparently it worked very well.

2) I don't know how stretched this story is, but Bud once told me he was
at a big multi-op contest QTH where they were running a very large
amplifier. He said part way through the contest they lost one phase of
the plate transformer. This dropped the TX power from 30 kW down 15 kW.
The thought of having to soldier on at "QRP" levels was so dispiriting
to the group they quit the contest. 🙂
