I decided to operate this one in person instead of remote. Turning a
real VFO knob instead of using keyboard arrow keys to search and pounce
is SO MUCH better. I was toying with the idea of using assistance for
this one, but I got a late start on the drive up and didn't make my
first QSO until 0040 UTC. Because I made such an abrupt start, I never
did get around to configuring the N1MM telnet feed, hence my
non-assisted entry. Forty is still my weakest band. I thought I might
have better luck working Europe on 40 than I did during CQ WW SSB, but
conditions were so much worse, that it was a challenge just to hear EU
stations, let alone work them. I did snag a few longpath on Saturday
morning, but that extra time on 40 meant being late to the all-too-brief
10 meter opening to Europe Saturday morning. Earlier on Saturday morning
I had a nice run on JAs on 80 meters, but I really blew it when it came
to working JAs on 40. I just didn't spend enough time calling CQ there.

I had a nice run of JAs on 10 meters Saturday night and to a somewhat
lesser extent on 15 meters. I was able to check the KH6J six bands box
(my minimum weekend success criteria). N5OT must have been the 20 meter
operator because who else would be using a bug at a multi-multi, but
Mark 🙂 Sunday morning I had a nice little run on JA stations on 160
meters. It's been a while since I have experienced that. It was a nice
surprise. I was even able to get one of the many seemingly deaf BY
stations on 80 meters to respond to me, which was an even bigger
surprise. The best SWL experience was hearing two Europeans on 80 meter
longpath (YL2SM and I think an R6). The 2nd runner up for SWL experience
was hearing LZ5R on 80CW Saturday night despite lousy conditions (that 3
element Yagi really works well). The best ears award goes to TK5C on
80CW. They always seem to hear well.

Great fun!
