It was a good contest despite conditions. The band closed at 0130z Friday
night. I ended up with 139 q. All the Asian mults called in during this
period
and I never worked any others all weekend. The band opened late on Saturday
morning but I picked up a bunch of Caribbean mults as they were the only
signals
audible. The only US signal heard was K4BAI for my first US contact. The
skew
path to Europe opened slightly with very weak signals. The band opened
directly
shortly after and I started getting answers to my CQ's. The band only
opened to Southern and Western Europe and I never heard any Eastern or
Northern
Europe. Sunday's opening was very shallow and short lived. I only added
one more mult (GM). The afternoon openings to Asia were very productive
but the
activity level was down from previous years. I suspect conditions were
responsible for this. I only had 35 q's the last hour of the contest.
Typically I have at least 60.
I really like this contest for several reasons. Mainly it is a daytime
contest
allowing sleep at night. We can work everyone which keeps the activity
level
high. Lastly I am competitive with the big dogs with my antenna height. My
only downside is the 14,000 foot mountains five miles west of me. I
struggle to
get VK and ZL.
1500 of my contacts were run. I did a few sweeps of the band but most of my
mults answered my CQ's. I felt pretty loud. JA's were the most
numerous outside of the US. But I had a lot of PY's call in with low
numbers.
My breakdown in mults were 66 DXC and 73 state/province. My last state was
WY
and I worked two of them. Ten of them were XE states that answered my CQ.
Mexico is usually too close but conditions varied from long distance to
short
distance all weekend. QSB was rampant.
This is still one of my favorite contests along with CQP and SS. I was not
disappointed.
73, Kurt W6PH
