I think what would probably be required is a multi operating system version
Same underlying engine
Different UIs
This would keep Windows and DOS users both happy.
One of the issues here is that it is getting harder to run DOS programs on
newer machines.
I personally don't use a PC at home, running Linux on a Mac, and have to run
a PC emulator to run SD (which doesn't work reliably in the emulator for
some reason - Paul hasn't been able to work out why)
My vote is for a Linux or Mac version :) hi hi!
If you want a stable OS then you can't do much better than a Unix clone.
