On some PCs there is a hardware conflict that has the
effect of disabling any software attempts to enable
expanded memory. If you're thinking of buying a PC
running Windows XP, and hope to use SD (DOS) on it,
the only way to be sure it runs is to try SD on it
first. I've found that many XP laptops that you find
in high-street stores will not run SD, but I'm using
a Dell laptop that does - I can't say if all Dell laptops
are OK in this respect.
I am less than 48 hours away from uploading a native
Windows version of SD that includes an internal keyer
(via a serial port). In runs in "console" mode, which
means it's character-based and looks very similar to
what you're used to when running SD in a DOS window.
This program runs in all versions of Windows - with no
memory configuration requirements. A prototype can be
downloaded from www.ei5di.com/sd/sd-win.zip.
