Comments:
What fun in CWT today. It may have been my highest ever score. My primary
focus was to work Gary, N5PHT, in Shelby County, IA, one of two IA
counties I
have never confirmed. That was accomplished when Gary called me in the
first
minute. I stayed on 40 for the hour because the rates held up and every
QSO was
a new multiplier. Was using the FT1000MP and Alpha 91b. 1 KW.
Antennas were a
40M coax fed half-wave dipole up only about 30 feet running north and
south and
an 88 foot center fed zepp up about 50 feet running east and west. As
expected,
the dipole was better for the west and the zepp for the north. However,
reception on the zepp was more difficult with a higher noise level than
on the
dipole. Switched between the two antennas frequently. Had a run going
on 7039
kHz with good rate and few unanswered CQs until 1346Z. After that, it was
search and pounce for stations who themselves were running. Only
disappointment
was calling old pal W4NZ five times and having him answer some other
(louder)
station each time. Ended up running again for the last two minutes (and
five
QSOs). K5DU, Susan, was calling at the same time as the last QSO before the
bell rang and we got to say hello after the CWT was over. Thanks for
all QSOs.
Gary, N5PHT, is going to be QRV from Audubon County, Iowa in the 1900Z
session.
That is the last county I need all-time in Iowa. So, I will be going
home from
work for that session and hope to work you all then. 73, John, K4BAI.
