Checking the ARRL club rules for distance requirements

Use of Six-Character Grid Locators

Locations will all be entered and displayed as six-character grid locators, such as FN21aw or DM02ks. It will no longer be necessary to determine latitude and longitude for members or a club circle center. The center of the locators will be used for calculating the member's distance from the club center using a standard algorithm that will also be public. A member may reside and operate anywhere in a six-digit locator that satisfies the distance rule. If the grid locator for a member is not known, "Distance Unavailable" (or words to that effect) will be displayed on the list. There are many online services that provide a six-character grid locator from an address or latitude and longitude. The maximum circle distances are NOT changing.

It appears you have to use the center of grid squares not latitude and longitude for members QTH to calculate distance. The ARRL has a distance calculator - https://contest-clubs.arrl.org/griddistancecalc.php <https://contest-clubs.arrl.org/griddistancecalc.php> to check this.

Using the proposed center of EM83vk

K2SX - FM03kl 286.069 km / 177.75504 miles
K4BAI - EM72ml 277.817 km / 172.6275 miles
N4DU - EM71uo 282.325 km / 175.4286 miles

This would put both K2SX and N4DU barely out side of the circle. Plus I forgot K4EA actually operates from his station in Chatooga County, not his home QTH in Canton. We don't want to lose Neil.

Using the same ARRL calculator for our current club center at 33.35577, -82.13733 which is EM83sf :

https://www.mapdevelopers.com/draw-circle-tool.php?circles=%5B%5B281634.5%2C33.2157012%2C-82.4681823%2C%22%23AAAAAA%22%2C%22%23000000%22%2C0.4%5D%5D <https://www.mapdevelopers.com/draw-circle-tool.php?circles=%5B%5B281634.5%2C33.2157012%2C-82.4681823%2C%22%23AAAAAA%22%2C%22%23000000%22%2C0.4%5D%5D>

K2SX - FM03kl 310.838 km / 193.1458 miles
K4BAI - EM72ml 247.966 km / 154.0789 miles
N4DU - EM71uo 249.524 km / 155.04703 miles

This definitely puts K2SX outside our circle. K4EA probably doesn't realized it but with our current club center he's outside of the SECC circle in Chatooga County. Because Neil's home QTH is listed on QRZ.com <http://qrz.com/> in Canton, GA the ARRL doesn't know this and probably doesn't make an effort to check things like this. But if Neil sells his house in Canton and moves to Chatooga County we would need to adjust our circle.

BTW if you're interested in checking your distance go to https://contest-clubs.arrl.org/viewlists.php?action=list&rowid=902 <https://contest-clubs.arrl.org/viewlists.php?action=list&rowid=902>

Sorry Dennis I tried....

I used the measuring tool and it appears we have it in a good spot since just about everyone (except K2SX) is inside the 175 mile radius circle for ARRL contests.
>>> I used the measuring tool and found a way to get possibly get K2SX inside our circle for ARRL contests by changing the club center to 33.35577, -82.13733 . At this point he would be exactly 174 miles from the circle. K4BAI who is our furthest west member would be 173 miles from the center. N4DU our furthest southwestern GA member would be 170 miles from the club center. AD8J our furthest norther member would be 161 miles from the center. On the map see the red marker for the current SECC club center and the black marker for the proposed club center. Someone please double check me to see if I'm right on this.

Since we don't have in face meetings for the club I thought it would be interesting to figure out where our club members are located. The club roster is very out of date so what I did instead was go thru the activity reports for about the last year that K4BAI posts every week. This would be more representative of who is really a member of SECC. Please checkout the map at https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1GT7PCEO9QeCyKw5aYEQYx755EXzkxd_h&usp=sharing <https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1GT7PCEO9QeCyKw5aYEQYx755EXzkxd_h&usp=sharing> . I was surprised to discover we still have some active members in both NC and SC but the majority as expected are in GA. We no longer have any members in AL since the formation of the ACG. This might be useful information if we might want to ever move the club circle to attract more members.

Because of the pandemic K4BAI and I are going to miss going on our yearly PJ4A trip for CQWW DX CW. This is going to end a streak of going to either PJ4 or PJ2 going back to about 2004 for me. John will operating PJ4A remotely from my house in CQWW DX CW. If you worked PJ4V in CQWW DX SSB that was Marty, W1MD operating the station on Bonaire remotely.
