Hello all:

Below you will find a request I received from Janice Smith, of Calhoun,
GA., about the late Lloyd Seay, W4NT, of Marietta, GA, who was Ms.
Smith's uncle. Most of you will know that the callsign W4NT is the club
call for our DX club. The old timers will no doubt remember Lloyd. I
met him at most Atlanta hamfests and also at our club meetings. I
posted something about him once and Ms. Smith found that posting in an
internet search.

She is interested in your memories of her uncle and you will note that
she is specifically interested in the location of his watch repair shop
in downtown Marietta.

If any of you can help her, you can find her e-mail address at the top
of this message. Please send me a copy, as I will make further
inquiries, probably of the Georgia Cracker Net membership, if we don't
get information from our membership.

Lloyd's family, I believe, gave our club permission to obtain Lloyd's
call as a memorial club call, shortly after he passed away.

Thanks for any help you can give to Ms. Smith.

73,

John, K4BAI.

Thanks so much for your reply. My sister, Kathryn, and I were in
Marietta yesterday to see "Turned Funny" at the Theatre in the Square (
a wonderful play--I recommend it to any fan of Celestine Sibley).
Lloyd was our mother's older brother. Over the years, we have wondered
so many times about the location of Seay's Watch Shop. She remembers it
as being on one side of the square and I remember it on the other side.
That is why I was doing the Google search--to see if I could possibly
turn up an old address. (Do you by chance know?)
We can both remember when we were children Uncle Lloyd paying us to
learn the Morse code. We did learn it, but I'm afraid that skill did not
last. He also paid us to be quiet while he and our mother and
grandmother were talking.
We can remember the ham radio setup he had in his and Aunt Evelyn's
bedroom--I remember it as taking up almost one entire wall.
One of our family stories was that as a boy (or a young man), Lloyd put
together the first radio in the community where they lived, and the
neighbors would come over to listen.
I would be glad to hear from you again.
Janice Smith
Calhoun, GA

I bought a Collins 75A4 receiver from him that he was selling out of
the trunk of his car during an Atlanta hamfest. Actually, I think it
was in the parking lot behind Ack Radio in Atlanta, but I was there with
my late father (also a ham) for the annual Atlanta hamfest. I worked
Lloyd on the air several times and often heard him calling DX (distant)
stations, mainly on CW. His old call, W4NT, is now the club call of the
Southeastern DX Club. The custodian of the club call is Dr. (Dentist)
Hugh Valentine, who has now retired to Darien, GA on the coast, but
sometimes uses the club call. I recall that the club call was used as
W200NT when the US was celebrating the 200th anniversary of the
Constitution. The 200 was substituted for the number in the callsign
and could be used by ham club stations in the capitals of the various
states.
