Fellow DX-ers,
It's no different now than when W4BPD (Gus) went around the world in the early 1960's. He was sponsored by the "World Radio Propagation Study Association". His managers included "Ack" (W4ECI) and Jimmy Long (W4ZRZ). The QRM was bad even then. As I recall I worked him at FR7ZC/J, ZD9AM, 9U5BH es 9U5ZZ through huge pile-ups.
Many times the name callers and QRM-ers are those who can't get through and/or don't know how to break a pile-up. With the increase in the number of hams it often takes big antennas and big power to get through early on. Of course now the propagation is not great above 14 MHz.
By the end of the operation most people will make it through on most bands before the CW DX Test this weekend when QRM will ratchet up a notch or two. Good luck to all.
73,
John, W4NU
