That problem is a "classic" for power supplies which have not been
used for a long time. The electrolytic capacitors tend to break down
in places, which is where the "bang" came from.
Normally, if one applies 12 VAC to the 115 V input for a few minutes,
the caps will replenish themselves.
The interference is from improperly filtered DC.
Replace the capacitors.
One more warning to all. If you are operating a power supply, and all
of a sudden, you hear what sounds like a rattlesnake, do this.
1. If you can hit the off switch within 2 seconds do it and then apply
rule 2.
2. Run like hell, the caps are about to explode.
