I read the article from K3NA on their 160 operations with great interest.
He confirms one thing I always thought.... " In many respects it did not
matter that some people were calling us non-stop; we couldn't hear these
stations"... I have been on the other end of pileups on 160 and normally
you only hear 1 or 2 people calling although on this end it might be a
constant roar or as the people spotting on packet report "a lidfest". Most
sound like they are calling constantly due to the quick fades by DX stations
that he mentions. You call, you listen and don't hear anything so you call
again but chances are he might be being heard at another location returning
to someone. But the chances are rare that you are bothering him. Sometimes
these fades are 1 to 10 minutes and the question is are you not hearing him
because he faded down or is he still tuning around trying to find someone to
answer? I see a lot of critics of 160 M operating when they are not fully
understanding all the mechanics. I agree this does not necessarily apply to
the other bands but would ask the "lidfest spotters" to imagine what the DX
station is hearing on 160 which is probably 1% of what we are hearing.
Pileups although sounding chaotic are the most productive way to get the
most stations through in the smallest amount of time unlike the "list
operations". 73 Mike K4PI
