I came across a book written by Darleen HC2YL/WA6FSC published in 1974
called "Globetrotting via Amateur Radio." Darleen was at a SEDXC meeting
that Van W4GIW arranged at the club house in his subdivision probably in the
late Summer of 1974.
Darleen operated from a number of different spots beginning with Tonga then
as VR5. One of the best QSOs I had with her was at 3B9DK.
For those who have forgotten or don't know Darleen, she first went to Tonga
with he OM Gene, WA6DKW in 1970. Gene had a massive heart attack and passed
away while they were there. Darleen decided to follow his and her dream and
travel the world. She married Joe HC2OM in Ecudor in early 1974 and she and
Joe settled in Little Rock, Arkansas where she became WD5FQX. Their
daughter also became a ham and she was active in both the YL International
Single Side System and the YLRL for a long time. She is still
listed in Little Rock but as I recall Joe became a SK
a number of years ago.
The pictures in her book of Dxers such as Robbie 5Z4ERR and a marriage
picture of a young OH2BH
sure bring back memories.
I joined the SEDXC in 1974 and many who are still active were at the
meeting. I bet some of you still have her book on the shelf. Makes
terrific reading. Oh, she signed copies of the book at the meeting.
