Just as in the golden years of coast stations, many listeners use the KSM
press and weather CW broadcasts for code practice. I first became aware of
this when I was unable to broadcast the 2130Z weather one Saturday. This
resulted in an immediate inquiry from a listener who was waiting, with the
earphones on, for the broadcast. Since then several others have informed us
that they too await the KSM broadcasts. Some of these listeners have
requested material that is less predictable than the weather broadcast.

Last Saturday the station was in broadcast-only mode because of work at the
receiving station. Transmitter Supervisor Steve Hawes edited a full day of
CW press and weather, this in addition to the usual RTTY service. We
received several appreciative messages about this service, especially the
press broadcasts.

Editing and broadcasting a full day of press and weather each Saturday would
be asking too much of Steve, who has many things on his "to do" list at the
transmitting station. But he has agreed to provide a morning (Pacific time)
CW press broadcast each Saturday.

The broadcast will begin at about 1000PDT/1700GMT and will continue until I
activate the receive station at about 1200PDT/1900GMT. At that point I will
assume control of the station and start sending the KSM "wheel". The usual
schedule including the traffic list at 2100Z and Pacific high seas weather
at 2130Z will continue.

The RTTY schedule, which provides press and weather throughout the day, will
continue as before.
