Ken,
I'm sad to report that Curtis George, W4SSU, is a Silent Key. Curt was
79 and lived in Gainesville. I remember us visiting him at his home on
Barge Rd. in SW Atlanta in the early 1960's. At the time he was flying
for Delta and had a windmill tower in his back yard with a 5 element 20
meter monobander festooned atop it!! Inside he had the typical FOUR 811A
Kilowatt, homebrew amplifier.
In those days the big dxers like him only had up a 20 meter monobander.
That was sort of standard. Of course our good friend Lee Foster, K4RPK
(SK) was one of Curt's cronies as you know. If you remember Lee put up
a 4 el Telrex monobander (36 foot boom) near where you lived. In 1962
he moved to Hillside drive in Buckhead near my present home. He was on a
big hill then as you know.
The only DXer in town that could beat Lee was Buck Joyner (W4TO) in SW
Atlanta (SK around 1970). It was rumored that Buck ran a pair of
4-1000A's. Is that QRP today?
73,
John, W4NU
