[SEDXC] Sad Deal

When I just Past 12 1/2 years old I got my novice license, KN4ROZ and when I turned 13, I asked all my family to give me cash to buy a new receiver to go with my Globe Scout transmitter.
My dad put me on a Trailways bus and I got off at the bus station on Lucky Street. Ack Radio was around the corner.
Tommy Ack sold me an RME 4350 receiver (remember the big curved face and 75:1 vernier tuning knob?). It was in a bigger box than I could carry, and Tommy put it on a hand-truck and wheeled it to the bus station for me.
When I went off to college I abandoned ham radio for several years. After law school we moved into an apartment in Roswell Road, just north of Wieuca. Chaz, W4GKF, lived nearby, and Morgan PAYNE from Rome, GA WAS MY NEXT-door neighbor. Ack Radio was no longer on Lucky Street
One morning I was driving to work downtown on Peachtree St. The traffic at Brookwood Station was backed up due to a wreck. So I turned down Deering St. to cut thru to Northside. As I approached the Northside intersection, I look up and saw the Ack Radio sign. I slammed on the brakes and slid on the gravel. I almost crashed thru the front windows.
When I walked into the store, Tommy was standing behind the counter. He looked at me and said “Aren’t you the kid from Winder who bought an RME 4350 from me 10 years ago?”
Tommy loaned me some used gear “to try out.” I went home that night and strung up a long wire antenna up 2 telephone poles with climbing spikes and worked a DX station on 20 CW. I was hooked.
I played poker with Chaz and Morgan Payne
Twice a month, and soon all 3 of us had purchased used Collins S Lines from Tommy.
I will never forget how nice Tommy was to me and so many others. The store will be missed.
                     Dale
                     K4ROZ

Once I bought a Heathkit mobile rig from him (Cheyenne and Comanche) where I paid too much, traded them back to him for a Hallicrafters SX-101 and HT-37 and later traded those back for a Collins 75-S3 and 32-S1 — and paid too much. Nevertheless, i loved that guy!
