What does his remote location look like? Does it have power, internet connection etc?

There is an interesting solution being developed for the ColibriDDC direct sampling SDR RX. It allows remote operation on bandwidths down to 70 kbps and only a small RPI server is needed on the remote side. The principle is explained here;
