Are Ten-tecs really so good

I have been reading the glowing comments about Ten
Tec gear. I am considering upgrading to something
better than my Triton IV (digital). My concern about
staying with Ten-tec is that the inside design of the
triton "looks" cheap and Radioshackish compared to
the insides of a Icom or Kenwood of the same era.

Performance-wise I get an S-9+ pulsing tone on 80
and 20 that comes from the digital clock I think.
Anyway I have sent it back to Tenn. and they say it is
normal and unfixable.

Are quirks like this engineered out of the newer types?
I agree the factory is great to deal with, but is the
underlying rig (say an Omni) as good as the best from
across the Pacific?
