Greetings Ten Tec Reflectees,

In doing some research on the continuing discussion about the use and
legality of external RF Amplifiers led me to

 http://www.access.gpo.gov/nara/cfr/cfr-table-search.html#page1

where you can download or search any of the CFRs. Doing a search on
AMPLIFIERS brought me to the Part 97 section 97.137 with excerpts below.

(begin excerpt)

                       TITLE 47--TELECOMMUNICATION

       CHAPTER I--FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION (CONTINUED)

PART 97--AMATEUR RADIO SERVICE--Table of Contents

                     Subpart D--Technical Standards

Sec. 97.317 Standards for type acceptance of external RF power amplifiers.

    (a) To receive a grant of type acceptance, the amplifier must
satisfy the spurious emission standards of

[[Page 695]]

Sec. 97.307(d) or (e) of this part, as applicable, when the amplifier
is:

<SNIP>

(c) Type acceptance may be denied when denial would prevent the use
of these amplifiers in services other than the amateur service. The
following features will result in dismissal or denial of an application
for type acceptance:

<snip>

    (5) Any internal RF sensing circuitry or any external switch, the
purpose of which is to place the amplifier in the transmit mode;

<snip>

(end of excerpt)

Number (5) under (c) stood out for if it were interpreted literally, ANY
amplifier that could be, either with RF sensing or by external switch,
placed into the Transmit mode could be denied Type Acceptance.

You figure it out!

Go read it yourself, it's as clear as mud!
