Well Ken since I just did my first rebuild of a TT VFO in my Corsair II I
think I can give some insight.
First off if this is your first rebuild get the kit from TT. Cost is less
than $20.00 but I don't know exactly what since I bought mine at a discount
from a second party that didn't need it.  After that save the used parts and
instructions for the next time.
I believe that you could use some good waterproof grease such as High Speed
bicycle grease instead of the TT supplied grease with good results but I
haven't tried it.
  The rebuild does take some time but is not hard to do and doesn't effect
the calibration of the VFO. Give yourseld three  hours the first time and
work slowly. Have a dish or some container to put the parts in as you remove
them.
  One of the most time consuming jobs was removing the VFO and
reinstalling. The front panel of the Corsair has to come off and this means
removing all the knobs. Then you have to unsolder the connections to the VFO
so be sure to write down where the different color wires go.
  Once the VFO is out you remove the cover and following instructions remove
all the moving parts and clean the old grease from them. You then apply new
grease to the parts and usually replace the bearings and race and then
reassemble.
  Don't be afraid that you might screw it up, as you won't if you follow
instructions. There are a couple of shoulder washers and flat washers that
you have to watch so you don't reverse them and you should be careful when
removing the tuning core from the coil so you don't break the coil wires.
Many of the parts are reused so be careful and don't loose any.
 Mine had a steel race and mating parts that had bad pitting on them and the
kit came with brass replacements. It's now works like new.
