If you aren't very sure of proper polarity of the power supply and
battery you have already fried the radio!

Battery acid from a poorly welded case will eat floors, including
concrete. Fumes from charging will alter walls and radios and connecting
cables. And tongues of dogs and cats who test for salt. Its worth the
expense to house batteries OUTSIDE in an insulated shelter contained in
sturdy battery boxes. Look at the better installations for remotely
located homes dependent on photo voltaics and batteries... They work
well despite the disadvantages of lead and acid and the regular care
required to equalize the cells and to keep them filled with distilled
water. And price effective compared to paying $5,000 to 7,000 per mile
for a couple miles of power line.
