All I know about this is that having a charger across a big battery has
never put hum on my signal running just a transceiver.

Wal-Mart's SAM's club here used to sell a fine marine battery.  It was all
sealed up so it could be used in any position.  The problem with marine
batteries is that they are easily damaged by overcharging!  If you get one,
be sure to get a charger designed for the deep cycle batteries and not a
charger designed for automobile batteries.  Most deep cycle battery chargers
have a timer on them.  You can tell the state of the battery's charge by
measuring its no-load voltage.
12.0 volts is discharged.
12.2 volts is 1/4 charged
12.4 volts is 1/2 charged
12.6 volts is 3/4 charged
12.8 volts is fully charged
After you charge the battery, you must let it rest for at least a half hour
before you measure its voltage.
